My Television Reviews
My Mini Television Reviews
My pet peeve is how FBI agents, CIA operatives and other law enforcement people depicted in dramas are so inept. They keep losing their suspects, getting hit over the head, having their guns knocked out of their hands because they are too close, being surprised by someone around the corner, getting trapped, getting duped, etc. Add to that, never waiting for backup.
Next is the observation that writers are running out of ideas. They now resort to more gruesome scenes, torture, more explicit sex, showing vomit when people barf, inane story lines. This happens even in some of my favorite shows.
Last peeve is how directors forgot how to build suspense in a story and resort to over-the-top music to convey what they can't.
One more thing. Why can't the USA produce TV shows of the quality they do in England and that we see on PBS and on BBC America? What I have read is that English actors, directors and producers take their craft much more seriously, and that is reflected in their work. Hollywood is just too much fun to take one's work seriously.

04.09.14-The Following
12 Monkeys-02.01.15-Not sure about this one. It's a little confusing and some of the acting is over the top. I'll watch one or two more before deciding what I think.Update-02.13.15-Too tedious to watch. Script may have written by monkeys!
36 Hours-09.09.15-Another travel show. I like it. The hosts are fairly likeable and seem to know their stuff.
60 Minutes-What happened to the investigative reporting that made this show worth watching? I usually don't watch anymore.
Agent Carter-02.01.15-This one is sort of fun. Another of the comic book genre. Don't expect Hamlet.
Agent X-11.10.15-Wow, this is awful! Terrible writing and horrible acting. Ridiculous would be a better word.
Allegiance-02.06.15-New CIA/FBI show (how many of them can there be?.) We liked it okay and will continue watching. The twist is that a new agent is somewhat of a savant, and, at least in the pilot, does not know that his parents and sister are Russian spies. It is played pretty straight without a bunch of throwaway lines. Shades of The Americans.
American Gods-Starz-05.16.18-Wow! This is weird. It is a fantasy, so be prepared. Not sure where it is going but will watch the next episode. Ian McShane, of course, is playing Ian McShane. Not sure if Ricky Whittle is up to the task.
Animal Kingdom-06.22.16-Drama about a criminal family, with the main female character trying to keep control over a bunch of bad guys. Not sure about this yet. There is no one to like. Don't believe the hype about fans of Sons of Anarchy liking it. It is a far cry from that show, both in acting skills and plot lines.
Another Period-07.15.15-Wow. Incredibly bad! A poor attempt at French farce. It does have its moments but they are not frequent enough for me to continue watching. I recognize some of the cast and wonder if they actually read the script.
Arthur and George-09.09.15-Series about Arthur Conan Doyle. It's fun and mirrors his Sherlock Holmes stories.
Ascension-12.18.14-Well, I like the premise, however the manner in which it is presented shoots numerous holes in that premise. Really, 51 years in the 'spaceship' and some girl born in it uses valley talk? Nobody even suspects that something's wrong? The acting is very poor and there are lots of soap opera elements in the script. I'll watch the third and final episode only because I have already invested 3.5 hours. Okay, I know, why did I watch the second?
American Crime-03.27.15-This may be the best real drama on TV. By real drama, I mean it is not Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder and their ilk. It is not a 'cop show.' It is a thoughtful narrative of people caught up in the web of a crime that has been committed. It unfolds like peeling layers of an onion, revealing more with each episode. In fact, the episodes are simply titled Episode One, Episode Two, etc., not with a cutesy title like many shows. As you watch, you see that, as the facts come out, what was assumed is not necessarily true. Race relations are portrayed as fragile as they are in real life. Great show! Update-01.30.16-Still one of the best dramas. It lays out the anatomy of an alleged crime just as I can imagine it happens in real life. Nothing is ever clear at the beginning. Update-04-14.17-What can I say. Still the best drama on TV.
American Gothic-07.07.16-Poorly done. Way too slow. Antony Starr was okay in Banshee but ill suited for this role. If you need to read lips, don't try it with this. Not sure sometimes it is him speaking. I know he can't help it. Lots of so-so performances. It centers around the Silver Bells murders where a killer leaves a silver bell at each murder scene. Really silly premise and not unlike many 'leave something to identify it was you after each murder' plot line. Anyway, I watched one episode and quit. I can see why the critics don't like it.
American Idol-Please! This show is so scripted and edited that I can't watch. The voting is done by America's dumbest. Change the name to American Idiots. Apologies to those who love it, like my wife.
American Masters-Pick and choose which to watch. Some are great!
American Odyssey-05.01.15-Interesting Industrial/Military Complex corruption story. however, the magnitude of the evil deeds by the characters seems a little overblown. We'll see how this progresses.
Angie Tribeca-01.30.16-It is hard to do a silly show well, but this one has done it. Shades of Airplane and Naked Gun. Lots of fun.
Anthony Bourdain-He can be hard to take but he knows his stuff. I watch even though I am a vegetarian. His insight on other countries and cultures is a hard thing to find elsewhere.
Atlanta-09.20.16-Can't decide. I'll do an update after another couple of episodes.
Atypical-08.18.17-Netflix-Good show but not perfect. My opinion is that Michael Rappaport was miscast. The only time I have liked him is when he played a backwoods degenerate on Justified. Jennifer Jason Leigh did a good job. Keir Gilchrist did okay, but I wish they could have found an actor that really is autistic.Did not like the ending. It did not fit with how the daughter had previously been portrayed. As with most TV shows, there were some unrealistic story lines and scenes, however. I would watch a second season.
Bad Judge-10.07.14-Well, I watched about 10 minutes of the first show and changed channels. However, I plan to watch one more episode to see if I was too hasty. It's getting good reviews. Okay, resumed watching but it is on probation. Update: 11.05.14-Quit watching.
Ballers-07.15.15-An attempt to let the viewer in on the inside of the sports business, ala Arliss. Dwayne Johnson does an okay job. It seems like some of the storylines are over the top, but, not being in that world, it's hard to say. Lots of sexy women but not as much sex as one would expect. It's fun and I will probably continue with it.
Banshee-Watch at your own risk! Update-Really getting gruesome. Do not tell your friends and family that you watch this. Update-03.14.14-Season over. Lots of surprises in the finale. 02.01.15-New season. Pretty violent. This show has ran its course. More violence and sex does not make up for poor story lines.
Baskets-01.30.16-Wow! Poor acting, terrible writing and a weak storyline. Zach Galifianakis is funny only sometimes. Not this time.
Bates Motel-I like it. Good acting. Let's see where it goes. Update-09.09.15-Have watched faithfully and enjoy it. Good acting! Update-03.10.17-Should have ended last season. This season's shows are full of filler material. Slow and boring. I will watch only because I have invested so much time that I want to see how it ends. Big disappointment! Update-04.14.17-Okay, it got better-we'll see.
Battle Creek-03.04.15-Another partner cop show. How many will survive? I did like the cast and the writing, however, will it continue to be fresh in a crowded field where every story line has been done to death? I plan to watch again to see.
Better Call Saul-02.20.15- Great! You can certainly see the work of Vince Gilligan. Bob Odenkirk is perfect and I look forward to him morphing into Saul. Should be fun. Update-04.14.17-Season 3-Going along okay but I am getting impatient waiting for the metamorphosis to happen. Michael McKean has done a great job as has Jonathon Banks, as Mike. Still one of my favorites. Looking forward to the maybe return on the cartel boss from Breaking Bad???
Big Little Lies-03.27.17-HBO-I like this show and did not read the book, as my wife did. So, I am trying to keep her from revealing anything. Bigly Effort! Great acting, with an amazing cast, and fairly believable plot lines.
Bill Maher-Yap, yap, yap, yap, etc. I like his monologue and New Rules and some of his opening interviews. the rest of it just another bunch of talking heads.
Black Sails-Really? Grizzled pirates with Hollywood teeth? A beautiful, well groomed mistress of the island in the midst of criminals? Come on! Most of the show has been on land. Where are the sails?
Blindspot-10.01.15-So far, I like it but this is not a new concept, that is, mysteriously knowing the future and helping save a potential victim. The tattoos give it a different slant. We'll see. Update-11.10.15-Okay, the gimmick is wearing thin. Probably will quite watching. Also, the lead male needs neck shave.
Blood and Oil-10.01.15-Wow! What a stinker. A poor man's Dallas. Couldn't get through the first episode.
Bloodline-04.14.15-Getting good reviews, however, I find it just to be another family drama, with the good son, the bad son, etc. I have too many shows I really like to spend more time on than this one.Never say never, however.
Blunt Talk-09.15.15-A disaster. Patrick Stewart must have been drunk when he took this role. I have already dumped it!
Boardwalk Empire-The best episodes are behind it. Update 11.05.14-Good ending to series. Nucky died unceremoniously.
Bosch-Amazon-02.10.17-Another cop show but a cut above some of the others. At last there are not a lot of throw-away lines like most. It has all the necessary ingredients: tough guy, rules-breaking cop, sex with another cop, captain who hates him, etc. etc. but at least the subject matter is treated seriously, so far. Update-02.14.17-Well, of course, the killer escaped from police custody so that they could spend the rest of season one looking for him. One good thing is that the normal 'cop's kid or wife gets kidnapped, etc' did not happen. Yay! Update-02.19.17-OMG. They did it. The ex-wife and the daughter of Bosch were kidnapped. Sad that they resorted to this cliché. Update-04.23.17-I still like this show but am getting confused by all the story lines. Hoping that it all becomes clear as the season goes along.
Broadchurch-03.10.15-Second season. Good beginning. Good acting, although the lead actor is one miserable guy. BBC America usually comes through, and this is no exception. Don't bother to watch the American re-make. Update-07.05.17-This season is really on target and presents one of the best procedural police dramas on TV. The lead actors are just plain good.
Brockmire-04.14.17-This is pretty crude with some hard-to-believe supporting characters. It stars Hank Azaria, so I will watch a couple more before deciding.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine-10.03.14-Tried to watch last season but didn't like it. Went back this season and now I do like it. NO LAUGH TRACK! YEA! Andy Samberg does a good job. Update-02.01.15-Still liking it and am starting to appreciate some of the other characters. Update-04.14.17-Wow, last episode was a total FAIL! What happened? I haven't dumped it yet but it must get better.
BrainDead-06.22.16-I get the story line but it's hard for me to see where this is going. Alien ants crawling into people's ears? Some of them end up with their brains exploding, some don't??? Is this satire? Is it a comedy? Is it a joke? Is it a farce? Is it just silly? You decide. People involved in the Good Wife are involved in this but, maybe, they should have tried something else. We'll see. I will continue watching for a while. Update-07.27.16-Well, it's definitely a comedy and now I like it. Very off-the-wall premise.
Bull-09.25.16-Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
CBS Sunday Morning-You must watch this to be able to appreciate solid journalism. Skip all the other so-called magazine shows.
Chance-10.30.16-Another Hugh Laurie show. I couldn't watch him as that insufferable, arrogant person in House. Who needs that? Anyway, I liked him in the Night Manager and now in Chance, I think. It is slow moving, so far, but has promise. I have always liked Gretchen Moll. The menacing cop/husband is suitably creepy. We'll see where it goes. Update-12.25.16-Hated the ending of the season one finale.
Chef's Table-06.05.16-Netflix-Great series of shows each highlighting a famous chef and their restaurant(s) from all over the world. The direction, although sometimes a little dramatic, and photography are very well done, however, the music is unnecessarily dramatic. What is interesting is how it is evident that these chefs are actually a little bit artist, a little bit philosopher, a little bit poet, a little bit narcissistic, a little bit batty, a lot smart, with a lot of passion. The backstories are pretty interesting. Their food is not for everyone and most have tasting menus of 20+ courses and prices of $150-$250 or so per person, not including the wine. This is not your steak and potatoes. It is food prepared in very different ways, with, sometimes, very different ingredients . I am not interested in dining at these restaurants but it's fun to know about them. Season 1 is better than season 2. Update-03.03.17-Season 3- Still good.
Children's Hospital-Only 12 minutes, but funny.
Colony-01.30.16-Another 'there has been some sort of invasion and the resistance is fighting it.' I like Josh Holloway but he is a one dimensional actor. Watched and then quit.
Conan-His 'shtick' is becoming tiresome and he needs to lose some of his regular features, such as 'Fan Corrections.' Give Andy a bigger role! Update-09.09.15-What happened to him. The gags are old, the guests second rate. I can't believe i quit watching but there are several better late night talk shows.
Copper-Dark, literally and figuratively. It's something to watch but not required. 05.13.14-Not sure if it will return.
Covert Affairs- I like it. Waiting for the new season. As in almost all TV series, you sometimes have to suspend belief when it comers to the plots and dialog.
Crashing-HBO-03.03.17-Created by and starring Pete Holmes. Very funny. A combination of innocence and crude. One of those I look forward to watching. 30 minutes, too, which is what all comedies should be.
Curb Your Enthusiasm-10.11.17-HBO-Boy, this is a big disappointment. Maybe another case of trying to repeat history. The original series was great, but after eight years, maybe the spark has disappeared. I will continue to watch because I love Larry David, but I hope it improves.
Dallas-Entertaining, but not a must see. Basically a soap opera. Watch while you are doing something else.
Dancing With The Stars-Awful, awful, awful! I can't even listen, let alone watch.
Death in Paradise-Harmless, guilty pleasure kind of show. Don't look for any Emmys. Looks like it's over. Whoops! It's back and not as good as before.
Designated Survivor-09.27.16- Not too bad. Lots of clichéd plot lines, but still sort of interesting. It has the prerequisite family drama, you know, the 'kids.' Every show has these. In this case it's the sweet daughter and the dope-selling son. Then, there is the power-hungry general, etc. etc. etc. I'll stick with it for now. Update-04.27.17-Quit watching. It just got too unbelievable. Is this a Shonda Rhimes show?
Dig-03.10.15-It's getting good reviews, but I don't dig it.
Doctor Thorne-Amazon-06.05.16-Fairly good period piece from Julian Fellowes. All of the expected drama, great costumes and good photography. Four Episodes.
Documentary Now-09.15.15-A spoof of documentaries. Not bad. Can they keep it fresh? We'll see.
Downton Abbey-A great show until the introduction of the rape story line. Completely unnecessary! Next season is deservedly the last. Update 01.21.15-Boring, so far. Update-03.01.15-I wish this show was off the air. It has been ruined by the rape story line and the subsequent, and constant, pointing of the finger at Bates and now Anna. Julian Fellowes, the series creator, seems to be obsessed with this. it makes me so angry that I actually posted something on Facebook. Will not watch anymore.
Drunk History-10.29.15-Well, it helps to be drunk when you watch this.
Duck Dynasty-It became too scripted and is rapidly losing viewers.
Deutschland83-07.15.15-A subtitled German series about spying, back when there was east and west Germany. I like it, but then I like spy stories. Does this stuff really happen?
Dr. Ken-10.05.15-no no no no no no no! Delete from your DVR schedule immediately.
Elementary-I don't watch it. A female Watson???
Empire-01.17.15-Well, my view is that this is basically another soap opera with a lot of inane dialogue and over-acting. I have watched two episodes and will watch the next one only because I want to see where the plot line leads. This is a failed attempt to expose viewers to the hip-hop culture. It fails miserably and comes off as phony and contrived.
Episodes-Who could not like Matt LeBlanc? The British couple sometimes get on my nerves. Send them back. Update-02.01.15-The British couple are still around and, maybe, not so annoying. I love Matt LeBlanc, so this is a winner for me. Update-09.21.17-What happened to this show? It moves at a snails pace and just seems to be out of ideas. The showrunner needs to apply a fix. I will probably continue to watch because I like Matt LeBlanc, however, I won't punish myself for long.
Extant-07.25.14-Sort of interesting, but very slow moving. Watching Halle Berry makes up for any flaws in the show. It's hard to believe, though, that, when she first knew she was pregnant, that people weren't running around like crazy to figure it out. Update 08.19.14-Really way too slow moving with not much really happening. This kind of show needs to reveal a little bit each episode, not stretch out any explanations for weeks. I think the writing is very poor. I quit watching.
Family Guy-One of my favorites. An acquired taste. Update: 04.09.14-Starting to get gross. Running out of ideas????? Update-09.21.17-Still watching faithfully. Makes me laugh.
Fargo-Really off-beat and dark. Some pretty violent scenes. I liked the first episode and will stick with it for now. Good acting by Billy Bob Thornton being his usual nut case and by Martin Freeman. Update-10.26.15-Okay, new season, new actors, new plot. So far, I like all of it. I do miss last year's cast, however. It's just good quirky fun, even though it can be bloody. Update-04.30.17-Still one of my favorites. This season they have Ewan McGregor playing two roles, which, to me, is an unwanted gimmick and is a distraction that was not needed. What purpose does that serve? It does nothing to enhance the story line and only gives the producers something that they can promote as a 'clever' idea. Update-05.13.17-Okay, another update. Wow! Horrible episode. They just had to show vomit and have a story line about someone needing a tampon and what they do to improvise one. This is not female empowerment. It is just that they are out of ideas. Carrie Coon is basically just walking through her role. I will watch one more. No more reviews, however. Update-05.19.17-I know, I promised, but this last episode, where they showed a person being forced to drink another's urine, totally turned me off, so I turned it off, for good.
Fashion Police-09.09.15-Not the same show without Joan. Not sure if I will watch on any regular basis. The current cast is a little not funny crude, unlike Joan, who was funny crude. Dumped it.
Feed the Beast-Cliché, Cliché, Cliché-What else is there to say? I think they threw in the part of the kid because they saw what a colossal failure this is.
FEUD: Bette and Joan-04.14 17-Good show with very good performances. Another 'how much of this really happened' show, but still entertaining. Great supporting cast.
Fleabag-09.20.16-Amazon-Wow. Very different. British series about a girl with not many redeeming qualities, at least not yet. Outrageous and filthy at times. I will continue watching because it is something fresh and new. We'll see how it goes.
Flesh and Bone-12.08.15-This is a show inhabited by a bunch of miserable characters. There is no one to like. The gay sex is sensationalized and unnecessary. I don't care that the dance world is inhabited by gays, but I don't need the graphic scenes. This is getting good reviews, but I'm not sure how much more I will watch. I do like to watch the fantastic dance scenes and appreciate the beauty of the incredible dance movements. If the storyline portrays reality, then I am really glad I am not part of that sick world.
Full Frontal-02.11.16-Samantha Bee is trying way too hard and does not provide any satire that you can't find, better done, in many other places. I like her, but not for this.
Game of Thrones-04.14.15-I started watching again and still am not sure I can stick with it. Maybe it's because I am not a big fan of this type of story. It is very well done. Some of the characters, in my opinion, are a little over the top, especially the tall women with a sword. I plan to continue watching to see if I can get hooked like the rest of the world. Update-07.16.17-I never got hooked and quit way back when but decided to try the last season. Well, episode 1 was boring and here are to many kids in the mix. I will hang in there but I am not optimistic that I will stay long-term.
Gang Related-06.23.14-This is another mob story, with a twist. The main cop character is actually working under cover for the mob. I have watched two-three of these and am not sure about the acting. It's not very strong, but the cop is pleasing to the ladies's eyes. Final decision after a couple more episodes. Update-08.19.14-Well, I almost quit watching and, then, there were some good plot twists. I still think the main cop character is a weak actor, but mercifully they killed off the head of the Angelico cartel-not sure I would have called him an actor-no acting involved on his part-must have gotten him off the street!
Garfunkel and Oates-08.10.14-Great little comedy, Lots of fun, but not for the kiddies. Update: 10.02.14-Well, too much time spent on the silly songs. Drop those. Not watching anymore.
Genius-NatGeo-04.30.17-I watched the first episode and am hooked. Good acting and an interesting story. I only hope that they don't overdo the 'docudrama' aspect, and stick as closely to the facts as possible. Einsteins's theories are all Greek to me but I like knowing more about the history of it all.
Girlfriend Experience-11.23.17-Starz-NSFW. This show really pushes the envelope. I can't even publish any details.
Girls-Another 'watch it if you can.' Usually good writing but sometimes unnecessarily crude. Update-02.19.17-This show hit bottom with low-brow trashy humor. I'm done,
Globe Trekker-09.09.15-I like travel shows. This is not the best and, sometimes, the host of the night is sort of silly, even though they all seem knowledgeable. Still, I will watch every episode.
Goliath-10.25.16-Netflix-Well, I have mixed feelings about this one. I watched all episodes and was not really satisfied. Some of the characters were just clichés, such as the weird CEO of a company who stays in his dark office listening to opera music (been done many times.) The last episode sucked! I like Billy Bob Thornton and some of the other actors but they can do better.
Gomorrah-09.20.16-Italian Production? Anyway, it is sort of disjointed and is aired in two episodes each time. Sort of violent, but not any more so that a lot of shows these days. Old plot. Mafia Don goes to jail, wife tries to take over, son bullies his way back to control. It seems that some things are lost in the translation. I am watching but I could drop it at any time.
Good Behavior-11.25.16-TNT-The jury is still out on this one. Michelle Dockery is the star and this is a complete role reversal from Downton Abby, where she played Lady Jane. I think she is better suited for that than being a con artist. We'll see how it goes. Update-11.30.16-Michelle is a great actress and totally unbelievable in this role. I also object to the show trying to humanize a vicious killer with lighthearted banter and Innocent looks. I might watch another couple of episodes to see where the plot goes.Update-11/02/17-This show has just gotten worse. Stupid plot lines, terrible character development. Totally unbelievable. Dumped it.
Gotham-10.07.14-One must remember that this is a comic book show and that the situations are presented as such. I'm watching but I don't know for how long. Update-11.05.14-Okay, I'm hooked. Update-09.21.17-Still hooked. It is interesting to watch David Mazauz and Camren Bicondove grow up on the show. I like all of the actors and appreciate how new villains are constantly introduced.
Gracepoint-10.03.14-Probably should not comment since I won't watch it. It's a remake of a great British series. Even has the same lead actor! Why can't they leave well enough alone? Oh, I know, money!
Grantchester-01.21.15-Innocent fun and pretty basic. Another British series, but not on a par with most of them. Not a must see, but okay if there is nothing else to watch. I suspect PBS got this series at a low price.
Gypsy-Netflix-07.05.17-RottenTomatoes.com critics hate it, the audience likes it and I am in between, mostly toward not liking. It's very slow and plodding. Only watched one episode. Chic-flick, I think.
Halt and Catch Fire-06.10.14-I was interested because my career was in technology. Well, the lead actor really can't act and they have portrayed the wide-eyed blond as totally unbelievable. Other elements of the story line just stray too far from reality. Too bad! It good have been better. Probably will only watch one more episode. 07.08.14-Still Watching. 07.25.14-Stopped watching.
Hand of God-Amazon-12.25.16-This has some interesting parts but the acting is not really that good. I think Ron Perlman is out of his element and the preacher and his wife are not believable characters. Dana Delany is doing a good job, but not enough to save this show. Update-03.14.17-I am watching season two and binge-watched the first 3 1/2 episodes. Will probably binge-watch the remaining episodes just to see what happens. I have not changed my opinion from my original post.
High Maintenance-09.25.16-Pretty explicit. Different. That's why I'm watching it. Not for everyone. Looks like different characters each episode. Update-10.28.16-Tried to into it. Could not. Just a little too screwy. Not enough time spent with The Guy.
Hinterland-Netflix-01.07.15-I have watched three out of the four episodes of this British crime series. It is a typical one with a brooding protagonist and too many murders for a small town in Wales. Still, I sort of like it , even though the plots are a little hard to follow sometimes. At this point, I will watch the last one.
Homeland-Great past seasons. Currently struggling. Looks like it is coming back. Update: 11.05.14-New season is great. Claire Danes will be up for an Emmy. Update-04.14.17. Season just ended. It started slow but built up steam towards the end. I was sad to see them kill off the Peter Quinn character. Claire Danes still the best dramatic actor on TV.
House of Cards-Great! Looking forward to next season. Update-03.13.16-Fourth season-This needs to be its last season. It has run its course. Update-07.05.17-Okay, the fifth season was okay until the last few episodes. The show went over the edge with really even more unbelievable story lines. Seems like they were following Scandal's ridiculous example of too-much!
House of Lies-This season sucks! Whoops, just got better! Still, dump the ex-wife character. Update-01.21.15-The gang is back together but with some dark sides. Not sure I love it. Not enough dealings with the clients. Too much inter-personal stuff. Not surprising, since this happens with a lot of series. They run out of story lines. It might be worth watching just to see Kristen Bell! This is on my soon-to-be-dropped list
How to Get Away With Murder-10.11.14-Watched 2 1/2 episodes and dumped it. I like the lead actress, Viola Davis, and wish she was in something better. Blame the writers for this one. The whole thing about her involvement with her class is loopy.
Humans-07.15.15-I like this, so far. The best part is Gemma Chan as one of the robots. The rest of the cast is a little weak but might come along. Robots rock! Update-02.18.17-Wow. Something bad happened to this show. It went completely off the rails and the show just wandered around with no real plot. Robots no longer rock-they just rust away.
Huang's World-05.01.16-An Anthony Bourdain look-alike show that manages to not look too much like Anthony's. I like it, even if it goes off-the-wall sometimes.
Hunters-05.15.16-Not watchable.
Ill Behavior-11.23.17-Showtime-Strange story line about a guy who has cancer and his friends try to force him to take chemo instead of homeopathic remedies. Not sure if the gimmick will last through an entire series. I'll keep watching for now because it has enough chuckles to keep it going.
Inside Amy Schumer-05.01.15-I started watching this because I have heard a lot of buzz about her. Well, she is like a lot of stand-up comedians-10 minutes of funny out of 30. She relies on shock value for a lot of her bits. I was surprised that some of her episodes were uncensored and allowed the F-Bomb. Never saw this before on Comedy Central. Probably will stop watching soon.
Intruders-10.02.14-Not sure I know what's going on but I keep watching it. It's a little violent and the story line does not hold my interest enough to offset that.
I'll Have What Phil's Having-10.26.15-Travel and food show with the creator of Seinfeld. Entertaining enough but the host is sometimes a little goofy.
I'm Dying Up Here-Showtime-06.11.17-Wow. Pretty bad! This kind of thing has been tried before and usually fails. That is, a dramatic or comedic, so-called inside look at some profession showing all of its grit, human interaction, blah, blah, blah. Usually laced with profanities, making it 'real-life.' Not! It has died. A waste of Melissa Leo.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia-Some shows are hilarious. Some are not. Great cast. Is it gone? Update-02-01-15-It's back! I love this show. The story lines are ridiculous and none of the characters have any redeeming value. But, it's so funny!
Jimmy Fallon-Love him. Only love about half of his 'stuff.' Basically, nothing changed when he took over the Tonight Show. More band members (Why?), bigger studio/set, plush audience chairs. Update-04.14.17-Just too much of the same shtick. Very vanilla persona at a time when other comics have ramped up their act. I usually only watch the monologue.
Jimmy Kimmel-Some good features, such as the man in the street interviews. His delivery is too stiff, but at least he doesn't resort to the 'shtick' mentioned elsewhere.
Jon Stewart-I gave up long ago because he has made the show all about him. His interviewing technique is awful.
Justified-Started watching this season. Judgement withheld so far. Update-03.14.14-Liking it, but some dialog and situations are over the top. Season over. Update-02-01-15- Last season and it is still violent, but I will watch to see how it is wrapped up.
Key and Peale 10.07.14-I like this. It is fresh and different. The production values are great for this type of sketch show. Hope it can stay that way.Update-09.09.15-The best sketch comedy on TV. Last show tonight. I will miss them.
Last Week With John Oliver-10.07.14-I like John. He really can dissect an issue and make one understand how ridiculous some things are in this world. What I don't like is his propensity to use the 'F' bomb or his in-your-face style. A little emphasis is okay, but tone it down a bit. Constant use of the 'F' bomb detracts from his message. BTW, I am no prude.
Late Night With Seth Myers: Watching but no opinion yet. He needs to quit that silly banter between him and Fred. His constant boyish grin sometimes is too much. Update-08.09.14-I am struggling to keep watching. 01.21.15-I quit watching. His schtick is too much to take. Update 2.06.15-Format has changed, so I am again watching. Seth actually has reprised his role as SNL Weekend Update Anchor. Still not the best. but watchable. Update-04.14.17-Probably the best political commentary around. I now always watch his monologue and his 'A Closer Look.'
Legends-10.03.14-Season is almost over. I like this series. It has a little bit of a twist compared to other 'secret organization' shows. Without Sean Bean, however, it would be nothing. You must pay close attention in order to keep up with the plot line.
Legion-FX-02.10.17-This has promise, if you like Marvel Comics, special ability stuff. The first episode did lay the groundwork for what is to come and how it came about. Might be interesting. I have not seen many of the X-Men type movies, so I look forward to sticking with this one. Fingers crossed. Update-03.09.17-Fingers uncrossed. I just could not stay with it.
Limitless-10.01.15-This is wait and see. Another 'something makes a person super something' show. Sort of a tired concept. Update-Quit watching.
London Spy-02.06.16- I love this show! As only the British can do, the story takes the viewer through the dark side of the spy business. Great performances by all the actors. Update-02.19.16-The ending was not satisfying.Too many questions.
Longmier-Satisfying. Update-11,23,17-Uh Oh. The show has taken a wrong turn and has strayed from its original satisfying story lines. Still will watch.
Long Way Home-11.23.17-Nat Geo-Based on a true story. Lots of combat scenes with good acting, sets and story line. Too bad president Bush sent these young men to die.
Louie-06.10.14-I like the story lines. Hate the stand-up comedy bits. His halting manner sometimes gets on my nerves (just spill it out Louie!) He seems to be a Hollywood favorite for some reason. He is a good interview on the talk shows. Update-06.23.14-Latest episodes were silly. I quit watching.
Lucifer-02.11.16-Not 100% sure about my opinion. The premise is a little wacky and the supporting cast is not great, especially the women who plays the cop. Tom Ellis is okay but I am getting a little tired of the smirk he wears 80% of the time. It's on probation.Update-02.19.16-Probation over. The gimmick is already tired. Stopped watching.
Mad Men-Wow, talk about running out of ideas. The threesome with Don, his wife and another seemed to be just pasted into the show for no reason.
MADtv-07.27.16-OMG!!! I watched about 15 minutes and I was shocked by how bad it is. Should be called BADTV. If I see any improvement I will update this, otherwise, presume it is still bad.
Madam Secretary-10.03.14-Not sure yet. It's a little bit of a stretch for Tea Leoni to play a hard-nosed character. I'll watch as the show develops. Update-11.05.14-Found that missing an episode or two is no big deal, so this becomes something to watch only when there is nothing else.
Making of the Mob-07.15.15-Actually more of a documentary but it really fills in some of the blanks left if you only watch mob dramas. I have learned a lot about the various members of the mob. The show spans a number of years.
Man With a Plan-10.25.16-Warning: LAUGH TRACK-Ugh! One of my favorite people, Matt LeBlanc is wasted in this. He must have been desperate. A typical kids, mom, stupid dad show.
Manhattan-08.25.14-The subject matter is interesting but the production is dark and depressing. Fictional characters are in constant turmoil. It has soap opera content. Maybe it was this way. I continue to watch only because I may learn something about the development of the atom bomb. Update-11.05.14-I have three episodes to watch. This show sort of wore me out.
Man in the High Castle-12.25.16-Amazon-Interesting concept. We have lost WWII and the axis powers occupy America. That said, it can be a little confusing at times and there is some alternate reality related to a set of films. We are into season two, so will probably stick with it. Update-01.28.17-Alexa Davalos and Rupert Evans seem to be sleep-walking through their roles in season two. They display only one expression. Luke Kleintank is miscast as a Nazi agent. The rest of the cast is good, especially actors in Japanese roles and Rufus Sewell as a Nazi SS officer. The story line is varied enough that I will keep watching.
Marcella-Netflix-07.27.16-Great acting by the lead, Anna Friel. The problem is that there were too many red herrings with suspects. After a while, it just gets tiring when they think they have him, now they don't, now they do, now they don't, etc. Other than that, it was done well, as are most British TV dramas.
Master of None-Netflix-12.26.15-Aziz Ansari is doing a great job. The supporting cast is good, too. The twist of having his actual parents portray his parents adds a fun element. Here's hoping the writing stays sharp. Update-12.29.15-Finished season one and generally enjoyed it. Will take a look at season two if there is one. Update-06.13.17-This show fell apart. The writing is awful and Aziz seems to be distracted and just walking through some of the scenes. Too bad. I quit watching.
Masters of Sex-One season might have been enough. This season, 2014, needs to ramp it up! Update-08.19.14-last two episodes were really boring. Update-09.09.15-Wow! Did they mess this up or what? The story line went way off track. I quit watching.
Maya and Marty-06.05.16-Wow, what a stinker. Second rate SNL skits, which is really third rate since SNL has mostly second rate skits. I like both Marty Short and Maya Rudolph, but not with this. Skip it.
Modern Family-Some episodes are good, others are so-so. Great ensemble cast. Update-05/11/17-Another example of a show going completely off the rails. The show just keeps getting worse and worse, like they hired monkeys to write the scripts. How it got renewed for next year is beyond me.
Mr. Robot-07.15.15-I sort of like it but it needs to establish more of a framework that can be followed. Right now it is jumping all over the place. Christian Slater is wasted in this. The main protagonist, played by Rami Maleck, has not yet established believability. Update-09.09.15-Okay, it finally hooked me, although I will need to read something that explains some of to me. Update-07.17.16-Well, this season is really dark. Not sure I follow everything. Again, I will need help.
Murder in the First-06.18.15-Just another tiresome police drama.
Narcos-10.11.17-Netflix-This season is the best. Yes, it is bloody, but the fact that a lot of this stuff really happens makes you wonder about humanity. Of course, these drug lords exist mostly due to the horrible drug dependency in the U.S. Government officials, police, business people are all complicit. The money is too great and the threats too real, for them to resist. Not just in Central America, but here too. Sad.
Nashville-Pretty good for a soap opera. Update-12.12.14-I quit watching because it became nothing but a soap opera.
Nature-Pick and choose which to watch. Some are great!
Notorious-09.23.16-WTH? This is horrible and I like Piper Perabo. Frantic pace, terrible dialogue and plot lines. Made me think I was watching a Shonda Rhimes production. Watched five minutes and quit.
NOVA-Pick and choose which to watch. Some are great!
Orange is the New Black-Surprisingly good, despite some rough scenes. Update-07.05.17-Wow! I think it has lost its way. The entire season is about what happens during a prison riot. It just gets a little tedious.
Orphan Black-04.27.14-This year seems more confusing as to who is who and what the plot is.Not sure yet. I'll try one more episode. Okay, I've got it now.Update-05.01.15-Well, the novelty has worn off and the show has become tiresome. I quit watching.
Outlander-08.19.14-Great reviews, but not my cup of tea. Quit watching after 1 1/2 episodes. The premise is a little silly, to me.
Ozark-Netflix-07.24.17-The critics aren't sure but the viewers like it. I like it too. It is a little dark but has undercurrents of humor. There really is no one to like, except maybe the main character's son. Laura Linney is doing a great job. Jason Bateman's character is a little too wooden but still comes off as interesting, because he surprises us from time-to-time. I plan to stick with it. Update-07.29.17-Well, the undercurrents of humor are gone, replaced with a lot of gore. I completed season one, which ended on a really sappy note. In fact, the entire series had a lot of unrealistic plot elements. Still, I will probably watch season 2.
Parks and Recreation-Has run its course. I love Amy Poehler. Update: I had five episodes on my DVR-Deleted them.
Paradise II-10.07.14-We like this show and are sad to hear that this is the last season. There is some good acting and we always like period pieces.
Partners-08.09.14-Started watching-laugh track-stopped watching. Also, the lines were lame! How could Kelsey Grammer be involved in this?
Penny Dreadful-06.05.14-It is!
Perception-Quirky fun. Eric McCormack does a good job. I'm over the hallucinations bit. Have him cured of this. Update 07.30.14-Well, I still like it, mainly because of Eric, and the FBI girl is cute, but an FBI AGENT!? I don't think so. Again, lose the hallucinations. It's getting old.
Pitch-10.09.16-It is okay but not compelling enough for me to take the time to watch.
Portlandia-02.01.15-This show really has its ups and downs. I watched pretty regularly during the first season, tailed off in the second and now not really watching often. Maybe the gag has gotten a little old. Update-08.22.16-Had 10 episodes on my DVR. Never watched. I initially loved it but Fred Armison started to get on my nerves. I know Lorne Michaels loves him but he also loves some other mediocre actors. I think I was swayed a little bit by Fred's ridiculous bits on Seth Meyer's show. His grin started to grate on me.
Power-06.23.14-Still another mob story, with a plot line that is not realistic. Some poor acting also, especially with the main character. I'll watch a couple more episodes before my final decision. Update-08.09.14-I ran out of power and quit watching. No real story line.
Prey-03.13.16-It's over. It was a good take on the innocent-but-chased-after genre. The ending, however, was a little lame in that the prey was exonerated because a cop was listening to someone else's confession. Too easy.
Public Morals-09.15.15-I am wait and see on this one. Will continue to watch unless the story line gets old. There seem to be no good guys anywhere. Crooked cops!
Quantico-10.05.15-Cliche after cliche after cliche. I quit after 10 minutes.
Queen of the South-07.03.16-I don't know about this one. Might be just another drug cartel show. I'll report back later. Update-08.07.16-I thought it would pick up steam, but it hasn't. The actor playing Teresa, Alice Braga really just has one facial expression and is not that good of an actor. Seems like this show is descending into just another Novella and the story lines show me nothing new.
Rake-A new one with Greg Kinnear. So far, very funny and well written. Kinnear is doing great, understated, comedic acting. ALERT-This show has crossed the line with an episode about bestiality and the main character has sex with his best friend's wife. This was supposed to be a comedy, not trash.
Rectify-07.13.14-This show is what I would call off-beat. The plot is simple and slow moving, but compelling. It's hard to guess where the story is going. I am hooked but can't really say why. Update-12.26.16-This show was one of my favorites and its last season was definately the best, with an ending that satisfied.
Resurrection-Shows promise. Nothing settled yet. Is it over? Update-11.05.14-Still watching. It has become a little more interesting.
River-12.29.15-Netflix-Pretty well done for a drama that has the lead character speaking to the dead. Stellan Skarsgard does a great job and carries the show. It is hard for an actor to carry off the brooding, loner type of character, but he does it well. The rest of the cast is also good. There is enough mystery and plot twists to satisfy most people.
Roadies-07.03.16-Could not even watch the entire first episode. Full of cliches, a stereotypical plot and extremely poor acting. A real stinker!
Roots-06.05.16-I have watched the first or three episodes and am not sure how well I like it. I'm probably influenced by how much I liked the original. This version seems to be too slick, with unnecessary over-the-top performances. Sometimes directors just get carried away and forget how to make something realistic. Lost interest and deleted the last two episodes.
Santa Clarita Diet-Netflix-02.03.17-Awful, awful and awful! Don't believe any review that rates this any higher than a zero. It is disgusting from the beginning. Timothy Olyphant needs to ditch comedy and Drew Barrymore needs to go to acting class. Too bad, I generally like these two actors.
Scandal-Started watching this season. I like it, but this is another soap opera oriented show. The plots are a little over-the-top. Update-10/03/14-Still fun to watch, plots are still over the top. Update-02.01.15-This week's episode was way off the mark. Olivia Pope held captive somewhere in a studio shop. Almost escapes, but doesn't? Please get back to basics. Another episode of this nonsense on 2.5. Update-04.07.15-Quit watching. It was just too bizarre. No semblance of anything real. Ridiculous story lines. The first shows I watched were sort of fun, but this series has run its course.
Scorpion-10.11.14-This is just a mash-up of 10 other shows that deal with groups that 'fight crime and injustice', usually as an off-the-books secret agency with over-the-top technology. Won't watch. Blame the actors for this one.
Search Party-11.25.16-TBS-Very quirky but sort of infectious. I wasn't sure after the first episode but stuck with it. Some pretty good character roles. The lead, Alia Shawkat, is new to me and she is doing a great job. So far, it is a harmless dark comedy about searching for a lost friend. Fun.
Second Chance-01.30.16-I'm sorry I gave this one a first chance. Poorly done!
Secrets and Lies-03.10.15-Similar to other series, in that the story is about a man who is suspected of murder and has to prove his innocence. Hopefully, there are some twists and turns that make this more interesting than the season opener. The person playing the detective is terribly miscast and portrays a totally unbelievable character. Update-09.26.26-New season is worse. The lady cop is still totally unbelievable and the characters are vapid. Will not be watching anymore.
Shameless-Wow! What will they come up with next? William H. Macy is terrific! Why is he not nominated for an Emmy? This is another 'don't watch if you are easily offended.' Do not tell your friends and family that you watch this, but go ahead and watch it.
Sherlock-A show that has been dumbed down. This year they must have a directors and writers who are high school sophomores. The ridiculous camera angles and the crazy superimposing of Sherlock's thoughts is insulting. Doesn't deserve renewal. Update-01.04.17-It's back and just as silly as ever. The storyline in the first episode was totally unbelieveable, even for a fanstasy show. Watson's wife was a secret agent?? I don't think I can stick with it. Update-01.09.17-What a mess. It just keeps getting worse. Inane storylines. Terrible acting by Benedict Cumberbatch. Can't watch any more episodes. Arthur Conan Doyle is spinning in his grave! What happened to-here is a crime, let's solve it-instead of convoluted, contrived plots? I am mad that it is this bad.
Shots Fired-04.14.17-Not sure about this one. It's topical but I think it is hard to accurately portray the divisions in race in a TV show. It's too complicated. Plus I am having trouble keeping track of who's-who. Black cop kills white boy. The Attorney General staff is called in. There are sexual liaisons, etc. etc. I am watching but questioning my investment of time. Update-04.23.17-I do appreciate that they don't use those stupid throw-away lines and are treating the subject matter seriously. The two lead actors are doing a great job, and I am now on-board.
Silicon Valey-05.01.16-Love this show. It's quirky funny, with a great ensemble cast.
Six-History Channel-01.21.17-This is badly done and stars one of my favorite actors, Walter Goggins, from Justified and other shows. Something about it just does not ring true, so I never made it through the first episode.
SMILF-11.23.17-Showtime-Not sure yet. Pretty explicit.
SNL-About two thirds of the sketches suck. Show relies totally on who is the guest host and guest singer. The performers must not be able to memorize lines because they all stare straight into the teleprompter. Very unnatural!
So You Think You Can Dance? The only competition show worth watching. It does a good job of focusing on the competitors and not the judges. Update-09.09.15-Not sure about this season's format and the idiot public voted off one of the best of the final six. Still, This is the only talent show to watch. Minimal antics by the judge and contestants who are really good. Update-06.15.16-This season is all about child dancers named The Next Generation.. Nothing wrong with that, but not our cup of tea. We want the original format. Probably will skip this season.
Son-04.19.17-AMC-Appropriately, it sort of rhymes with 'Dumb.' Full of stereotypes and clichés, Pierce Brosnan is horribly miscast. The story lines are not believable. So, I recommend you pass on this one.
Sons of Anarchy-Well, watch it if you can. I like it, but it's full of sex and violence. Update-10.02.2014-This is the last season (2014) and the streets of Charming are bloody. This show caters to some dark side of us since there are few characters with any true redeeming qualities. Update-12.12.14-Season over and it was very bloody. The final episode ending was not satisfying. Jax riding his bike into the very truck that was driven by the last person to see Gemma alive, besides Jax and Unser, was really a stretch. Also, the scene when the club was going to commit mayhem was overly staged. I could have written five better endings!
South Park-Has seen better days. Watched only by groupies.
Spy in the Wild-PBS-03.03.17-Great nature show using 30 animatronic spy cameras disguised as animals to secretly record behavior in the wild.
Sneaky Pete-Amazon-01.21.17-Get ready to suspend belief, but in a fun way. This is a comic-book-like kind of show with great characters, not the least of, Bryan Cranston. It is sometimes funny, sometimes sad but pretty entertaining overall. Another of my favorite in the cast is Margo Martindale, who has done great acting in a number of shows. A big 'Watch It' from me.
Speechless-09.27.16-Funny. A great cast. Hope it holds up. Update-10.28.16-Turned out to be just another bad sitcom. Stopped watching.
State of Affairs-01.21.15-Was not sure about this when it started. Now I am hooked, and not just to see Katherine Heigl. This CIA drama is played straight, without the usual stupid throw away lines. She seems believable and the show takes its subject matter seriously. How refreshing!!
Stephen Colbert-Very smart guy, but why does he really need to shout everything? Looking forward to see how he will do on the Late Show.
Supergirl-11.10.15-Fun show, but will it last? Not a must-see.
Taboo-01.27.15-This a dark show. Figuratively and literally. Sort of like the BBC's Coppers. Not sure where this is going. The 'taboo' part seems to be about a brother and step-sister who have done 'you know what.' The story line, however is about property he owns that both the British and Americans want. Not a great show and I am quitting.
Taken-03.03.17-First episode was good. I'll update later. Another 'clandestine, special team' type of show. We'll see.
The Americans-Exciting with pretty good story lines. One of my favorites.
The Black List-Good. Has come into its own. James Spader is the heart of the show, even though, on some episodes, he is not on screen very much. Update-10.02.2014-Not sure about the new season (2104) but my opinion is the the person playing the character Berlin is a reach. He is not believable at all! Update-03.16.15-Running out of ideas? Last week's episode was about a people auction, which included Red. What a ridiculous story line! Same thing happened on Scandal. Update-10.05.15-Totally veered form the original premise. I stopped watching. Instead of the story line being about the next one on the Blacklist, it has devolved into episodes about the team members. I guess they ran out of real story lines.
The Brink-07.15.15-HBO screwed up this time. This is horrible. A lame attempt at political satire turns out to really be a farce, and a poor one at that. Who owed Jack Black this favor?
The Catch-05.01.16-Watched a few and then quit. The storyline is ridiculous and what's-his-name, the lead, had only one facial expression. It got worse instead of better.
The Civil War-09.09.15-This show was first aired in 1990. I love it. Well done and I get to learn more about the Civil War.
The Collection-03.09.17-Amazon-So-so. Not sure I really care about the fashion industry but will continue watching unless I don't have time. I am always skeptical about so-called 'inside stories.' The lead actor, Richard Coyle, is one-dimensional and the person playing his brother, Tom Riley, basically can't act. Probably will see it through to the end.
The Comeback-12.01.14-Well, I love Lisa Kudrow but was not sure if I loved this show. I gave it a second chance and now I am hooked. It's a little quirky, just like her other series, Web Therapy. Don't expect normal stuff to happen.
The Crown-11.07.16-Netflix-What a fantastic production! It looks like no expense has been spared. Although I am not a fan of 'true story' dramas that fill in dialogue where there is no record of that dialogue, I really like this and understand that need for dramatic license. I am English, so this is especially entertaining for me. The acting and the sets are first-rate. As usual, the music is way too intrusive and I think the director could have conveyed what he wanted without that.
The Deuce-09.17.17-HBO---NSFW, for sure! Pretty graphic show about NYC, prostitution and the porn industry in the seventies. I remember Times Square when it was just a gritty, nasty place. Went to NYC a lot back then. Anyway, the show has star power, but, the gimmick of James Franco playing twins is a distraction and really did not need to be a part of the story line. You know, one twin gets mistaken for the other, etc. It would surely have been easier to shoot with two different actors. Maggie Gyllenhaal is doing a great job.Great shots of 42nd Street back then. I'll continue to watch and hope that a solid story line comes about. The first episode sort of skipped around.
The Fall-01.17.15-Netflix-This is a great police drama and showcases Gillian Anderson. It is sometimes a little slow-paced but there is enough happening that one can put up with that. Jamie Doran, who plays the antagonist, is creepy good. The show does a good job of being suspenseful without being explicit. British drama at its best.
The Following-Creepy, lots of mayhem. Started slow this season. Picking up speed with some pretty scary story lines. Update-How can the FBI constantly let the bad guys escape? It happens every week! That is ruining the show. Also, it's getting more gruesome. The new story line at the camp is really lame! Update: 04.09.14-I QUIT WATCHING-COULD NOT STAND IT ANYMORE!!!!!
The Gong Show-ABC-07.05.17-The critics love it, the audience loves it and I love it. Mike Myers does a great job and the show is just simply a lot of fun.
The Good Doctor-09.30.17-What a waste of the talented Freddie Highmore. I watched 10 minutes and saw that it was going to be a soap opera. Too bad.
The Good Place-09.23.16-Two of my favorite actors did not start out well in this show. For some reason, it is getting good reviews so I will give it a chance by watching a few more episodes.
The Good Wife-It's as good as all the reviews say. Update-10.02.14-The new season (2014) is even better! Update-01.05.15-Still good but they need to wrap up the Carey Argos story line. It's getting old. Update-10.26.15-Still excellent.
The Grinder-10.01.15-Very funny. Great acting and great cast.
The Handmaid's Tale-Hulu-04.27.17-Using my free trial on Hulu but will probably have to pay for a couple of months in order to see all the episodes. I think it will be worth it because I really liked the first episode. I have always liked Elisabeth Moss. The tale is pretty creepy and dark, with good acting all around. A little violence but no explicit sex yet. Of course, due to the story line, there will be sexual encounters. Hopefully, the show runner keeps from using sex as the only reason to watch.
The Knick-10.26.15-Started watching just this season. Very dark and depressing. Not sure I can stick with it. This is a period piece that might be trying too hard. Update-12.16.15-I dumped it because it was going nowhere.
The Last Man on Earth-10.01.15-I got hooked last season. Who can not like Kristen Schaal? And Will Forte is just crazy enough that his role works. Update-04.14.17-Will and Kristen are the only reason that I still watch. January Jones just phones in her character-sad. Maybe this has run out of ideas. Update-05.11.17-Yes, they ran out of ideas. I quit watching.
The Last Panthers-05.15.16-I like this show. Jewel thieves, obsessed insurance investigator, whom the cops wish would leave the investigation to them, double crosses, gangs, etc. Not award-winning but watchable.
The Last Ship-06.24.14-Enjoyed the first episode. Looks like it could be a winner unless it devolves into too much back-story on the characters. Update-07.30.14-Rapidly becoming boring. They will need to leave the ship a lot more in order to create some new angles and personalities. Update-09.09.15-I stuck with it and am happy I did. The finale was a shocker. Let's see if they can 'last' another season. Update-09.20.16-Season over, This is another show where I can't explain why I watch it. It is full of clichés and not-believable heroics. Maybe it's the military stuff that I like.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert-09.16.15-What a disappointment. I was expecting something new, but it's not. Just more of the same banality that infects many talk shows. I'll probably watch an episode from time-to-time but what a letdown. Update-10.01.15-Well, I took it off my DVR schedule. He is acting like a 14 year old clown, and the cutesy stuff the band does is really lame.
The Late Late Show with James Cordon-12.26.15-A breath of fresh air. Someone who can actually perform. Not every show is great, but the good ones make up for it. I also like the way he interviews his guests together. That makes it more interesting, as they playoff each other. There are some pretty good skits, too. We'll see if the show can stay fresh.
The Leftovers-07.03.14-I quote from a review "You will not want seconds." The show sounds like a vain attempt to cash in on other, similar series. Plus, such a silly title. Will not watch.
The Man in the High Castle-12.15.15-Amazon-Well, it was interesting but confusing. The premise was unique in that it portrayed the allies losing WWII and the USA split up between Japan and Germany, but I lost track of the alternate universe that they were suggesting. Still, I would watch another season.
The Mick-01.04.16-This stars one of my favorite comedy actresses, from Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Kaitlin Olson. I am real iffy on this. The pilot was not good and the first regular episode was just okay. It has promise, but the supporting characters need to step up their game. I hope they don't morph Kaitlin into a 'nice' person and ruin the premise.
The Mysteries of Laura-10.02.14-Guilty dramady pleasure. Debra Messing is an easy look and she does a pretty good job of acting. Since the stories are containing in each episode it's no big deal if I miss one. This is not a 'must see.' Update-10.26.15-Still like it. Light and easy to follow. Not a must watch, however.
The Musketeers-06.24.14-This is almost like a cartoon done by real life actors. Lots of cliched situations. It's sort of fun, but will it (or I) last? Update-07.07.14-Could not watch anymore. I didn't last!
The Newsroom-10.07.14-Okay, I watched one show of the first season and didn't like it. Since then, I have had some friends, Tom and Karen, tell me I should like it. So, I plan to catch up. Update-10.21.14-Okay, we have watched all of season one, ready for two.I really like the subject matter, but think many of the one-on-one scenes in the middle of the newsroom are unrealistic. Also some of the secondary story lines are a little weak. I am invested now, however, and look forward to watching the second season. Good acting, even when I don't like the lines. 10.23.14-One thing that I noticed is that, since the show deals in then-topical issues, watching older shows is sort of anti-climatic because the issues are old and have already been discussed to death.
The Night Manager-05.01.16-Netflix-This show is growing on me and I read that it will continue to get better, so I will stick with it for now. Tom Hiddleston is doing a great job.
The Night Of-07.27.16-Compelling. A 'must watch.' So far, good acting all around, except that the police detective character might be a little overplayed. One can see the hopelessness that someone in jail feels and get a glimpse about how our criminal justice system works, or doesn't. Update-08.10.16-Well, a reviewer said it best. "The show has lost its way." How true. It has slowed down and is stretching out some of the plot lines. What really got me is the scene in which the lawyer followed a suspected murderer, much bigger and meaner, down a bunch of dark alleys. WTH? This is the oldest bad scene in the world and happens on numerous shows, as I mentioned at the top of this blog. Sad.
The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore-02.01.15-I sort of like part of this, mostly his opening segment, The panel discussion not so much and his handing out of 100% Real Cards not all all. I do like his more low key approach instead of shouting like some other hosts. We'll see how this goes. Update-09.09.15-Quit watching a long time ago. Boring!
The Player-10.01.15-Another stupid concept with a lot of over acting. Wesley Snipes??? C'mon. Will watch no more
The Returned-Not sure where this is going. Looks like it may turn into just another zombie show. Stopped watching, in favor of the new show Resurrection. It might be gone.
The Story of China-PBS-07.05.17-Fantastic look at China's history, all the way back to the Song Dynasty. Michael Wood is just terrific as the host. How can he know so much? Must watch!
The Strain-07.30.14-It was too much of a strain to watch it. Another seemingly interesting concept turned into just another scifi/horror show. Hollywood is out of anything new!
The Tunnel-06.22.16-A remake of The Bridge? Similar plot. Anyway, so far I like it. We'll see where it goes. There is a little stereotypical cop vs. cop stuff. Considering it is a an English and French production, that could keep it sharp. Update 08.22.16-Just could not hold my interest. Had four episodes on DVR that I won't watch. I think it could have been better but the story line just meandered. Update-07.05.17-New season and it is much better.
The Voice-Gimmicky and dumb. I wish the button would turn the chairs upside down.
The White Princess-04.19.16-STARZ-I like these English period pieces. Even though they are docudramas they give me a sense of the history behind them. I reserve my opinion about Jodie Comer in the lead. I loved her in the TV show Thirteen. I need to see more of her in this role to see if she can pull it off. The supporting cast is good, except for Jacob Collins-Levy. So far, I don't see him as a king. Maybe he will mature in the role. Worth a watch.
The Young Pope-HBO-01.21.17-Wow! This is pretty unusual. An American pope that seems to be defying many church traditions. An egoistical emotionally unstable and unpredictable psychopath? (No, not Trump in this case.) I guess we will see in future episodes. I plan to stick with it.
Thirteen-07.03.16-What a great show, with very good acting by the entire cast, especially Jodie Comer. This has enough twists and turns to keep you alert and interested. Not a new plot line but better done than all the others.
This is Us-09.27.16-Nothing wrong with this, I guess. Just not for me. Thirty Something, but not. Women will like this. I know, a sexist remark, but there are shows only men like, too.
Tin Star-10.14.17-Amazon-This started out being a little confusing but has sort of settled down. Lots of plot twists. Only one or two people to like, the daughter and her mother. Maybe, we'll see. It turns out one is not sure who to like. Tim Roth is doing a good job as is most of the cast. An exception might be the 'Bad Guy' from the oil company. Maybe a little too over-the-top. I read where you either love this or hate it. I am somewhere in between right now but hope to get to the love level. Update-10.16.17-Finished the series. Disappointed. Several story elements that were stupid and just not plausible.
Top of the Lake-09.17.17-Sundance-First of all, the info on Uverse related to the original series, not this one. Threw me off. Anyway, this show has been described as a mess but had high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. I think it is sort of a mess. It seemed disjointed and I had this feeling while watching that it was too unreal. I do like Elisabeth Moss and she did her usual good acting. Of course, she only has one facial expression in all of her shows. I expected a cop show but most of it was related to interpersonal relationships, which I don't hate but I needed more 'action' out of a six hour show. The subject matter was topical, about forced child surrogacy and the sex trade and showed us all a side of humanity we wish did not exist. Nicole Kidman had a part, and the question is why? It was minor and could have been played by anyone. Overall, it was okay.
Tracey Ullman's Show-11.07.16-I have always liked Tracey. Each episode is a series of skits where she plays different characters. It's hit and miss, like any skit show, but it's fun.
Transitions-12.15.15-Amazon-Binge watched the first season and loved it. Not every episode was strong but, overall it was strong. The acting is excellent, however, don't look for too many characters to like. They are mostly egotistical and self-centered. Jeffrey Tambor is portrayed as a sympathetic character and is carrying the show, in my opinion. Getting ready for the second season binge. Update-12.29.15-Well, the second season was disappointing. The storyline strayed pretty far from season one.
Travelers-12.31.16-Netflix-Stars one of my favorites, Eric McCormack and has a strong supporting cast. Even though it is science fiction, I like the storyline. It's not new: 'people from the future come to save the world' and you wonder why they don't explain that each little action by them would alter some part of the future, but it's pretty well done. If it catches on it could last a few seasons, given that they can have a new 'mission' every few episodes or so. There is also some good character development. Update-01.02.17-I won't spoil the finale, but it was not satisfying. Too many things not explained, even if there is another season.
Trial and Error-03.27.17-NBC-This will not last. I really like John Lithgow but he will not be able to carry this show by himself. The supporting characters are weak and the plot has no legs. I'll continue watching mostly because of Lithgow. Update-04.14.17-I am still watching. It got a little better. Will probably see it through.
True Detective-Slow, but great acting by Mathew McConaughey. Short series, to come back with different actors. Next set of shows needs more story definition. Update 10.03.14-The new season has not yet started but I am concerned that, given the new actors, it will be a bust. Update-07.15.15-Well, this second season does not grab me. It is, as the reviews said, really dark and there is no chemistry between the cast members. I'll try another one or two, hoping for an upswing. Update-09.09.15-Watched the rest of the season and was not really impressed. I think they tried too hard. We'll see about next season.
Turn-TURNed it off! Poor acting and story telling. Too bad. I like period pieces.
Tyrant-07.03.14-Well, I'm not sure. I am a little influenced by the controversy over the lead being played by an obviously-not Middle Eastern. It sort of ruins it. Let alone that the lead actor can't really act well. I'll continue watching because I sort of like the plot line at this point. Update-07.15.15-This season is off to a rocky start. No real sense for where the story will lead us. Another wait and see. Update-09.09.15-I liked where this went and am looking forward to next season. Update-07.27.16-Losing interest. Some incredulous plot lines (Wife and daughter leave the palace in a caravan, in an extremely hostile place, and get kidnapped??? I was surprised that they killed the daughter. Because of that, I see the story line taking a different direction. Update-08.07.16-I'm done. They should have never killed off Jamal. The brother just can't carry the show and it is becoming just another soap opera.
Under the Dome-Update-07.03.14-I'm watching the new season but am undecided. Get rid of the head guy, or change his dialog and situations to be, at least, a little bit believable. Update-07.09.14-Probably have watched my last episode. Really silly this season. Bad plots and mediocre acting. I liked the idea, but! Update-07.29.14-I dumped the Dome!.
Undercover-BBCAmerica-11.23.16-Another good British cop show. Not great, but okay. There were a few plot elements that made one suspend belief and there were some unanswered questions that could lead to another season. The writers played fast and loose with reality. The acting was good. Probably would watch another season.
Veep-05.01.16-Julia Louis-Dreyfus is terrific. I can't say the same for most of the rest of the cast, but she is dominant enough to keep the show going.
Versailles-Ovation-11.07.16-Another great period piece with terrific production values. History made entertaining. I visited there once, so I am doubly interested.
VICE-03.10.15-The best news show on TV. It usually takes two subjects and gives each 15 minutes. It is in-depth and avoids the cliches and fawning of other shows. The subject matter is sometimes controversial and the reporting is usually done in the field, where it happens. MUST WATCH!
VICE News Tonight-04.14.17-A real news show-must watch.
Victoria-03.03.17-PBS-Love it. I don't know how factual all the details are but it is a great production and Jenna Coleman is fantastic as Victoria, and is also beautiful. The entire cast is great, the costumes are beautiful and the set decoration is terrific. A must watch.
Vinyl-03.11.16-Not sure if this really reflects the music business in the 70s. It has lots of sex and violence and there is nobody to like. The characters playing famous musicians do a poor job. For now, It must get better for me to watch beyond one more episode.
Wanted-11,23,17-Netflix. I like this. Dirty cops, dirty crooks and two women caught in the middle. Enough of a twist to keep me going. The two leads play off each other nicely.
Watch What Happens Live-10.29.15-This show is horrible. How does it manage to attract all the big names??? Don't they know people are watching? But, not me. Viewer phone calls??? Stupid games????
Wayward Pines-06.05.16-Second season. First season was not too bad. This season, however, the cast is mostly different, so I am waiting to see how it develops. Critic's reviews say it gets better after the first two episodes. The premise is a little over the top, but, after all, it is basically science fiction. Will the mutant creatures win or will the town survive?
Web Therapy-12.01.14-As I said in my review of The Comeback, I love Lisa Kudrow. I watched the first season of this show and was okay with it. This season, however, it just seems to drag and the pace just wears me out. Too bad. It could be better.
Welcome to Sweden-08.10.14-Quirky fun! I guess it's gone.
Wentworth-12.19.14-This is on Netflix and is along the lines of OITNB but much more violent and certainly not a comedy. I have watched 9 episodes and plan to watch all 22 that are available. It is not for the squeamish but has some great character acting, especially by the main antagonist.Looking forward to season three. Update-07.05.17-It's back and is in great form. The old warden is now in prison and this makes for some great story lines.
Westworld-10.09.16-Hard to tell how this will do, but I like it. The ratings are good. Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins are good choices for their roles.
Will and Grace Reboot-09.30.17-Wow, I really liked the old show but am not sure about this one. The laugh track is awful. Probably had it originally, too. I really like all of these actors, but the seem to be forcing it. I'll watch a couple more episodes and see. Disappointed.
Wisdom of the World-10.24.17-We like Jeremy Piven, but he can't carry this show. This is another whiz-bang-look-at-how-we-can-use-computers-and-social-networking-to-solve-crimes show. This concept is over-used and usually takes liberties with what is actually possible. Of course, he is looking for who killed his daughter. Often it is this plot or the daughter has been kidnapped. Interesting idea to use social networking to get the 'crowd' to help solve crimes but, in reality, would be fraught with problems.
Wrecked-06.22.16-It is! A poor attempt at a humorous version of Lost. Hard to watch, so I quit.
X Factor-Never watched.
X-Files-02.19.16-Watched the first episode but could just not get back into it. The original, I remember, was more subtle where this version is pandering to those who want to see actual aliens. I am with the critics on this one, who are not crazy about it. .
You, Me and the Apocalypse-03.11.16-Wow! How does rate an 8 out of 10 on IMDB and Rottentomatoes? Who is doing this rating, the producers? It is pretty awful.
Z-The Beginning of Everything-01.28.17-This is about Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The acting is pretty good, but Christina Ricci and David Hoflin just do not look the part, however i am a fan of Ricci in other performances. The sets and costuming are great, and the story line is compelling enough, that I will watch through the end. One good thing is that the episodes are only 30 minutes, as all shows should be.
Zoo-07.15.15-The animals turn on us! Lots of gore and not much of a storyline beyond the premise. I'll watch another one to see where I go with it. Update-09.09.15-It was a fail.
